ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia Supplements
I love these plasmalogen precursor supplements, ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia, for repair, healing and support of the nervous system. Plasmalogens are an important component of our cell membranes, essential for function, particularly in the nervous system. They are also potent antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory benefits, thus supporting repair and maintenance of our cell membranes (and thus cell function) promoting overall health. Perhaps most importantly, plasmalogens are critically involved in nerve function, being indispensable in supporting neural processes and overall well being. ProdromeNeuro may be gently stimulating, so is recommended in the morning, with or without food. This supplement may primarily benefit brain gray matter, neuron and neuromuscular synaptic function. ProdromeGlia may be more calming, so is recommended either with dinner or just before bed. This supplement may be best in repair and support of brain white matter, myelin, and heart membranes.
FATTy15
Fatty15 is an essential fatty acid, specifically a saturated fat, which is technically called pentadecanoic acid. An "essential" fatty acid means that this is a nutrient that our bodies need, but can't make on their own. It can be found naturally in dairy fat, some red meats like beef and lamb, some fish and a few plant foods such as chia seeds and cabbage (though generally in lesser amounts when compared with animal foods). Some research, albeit research funded by the company that produces and sells fatty 15, suggests that pentadecanoic acid may promote healthspan and longevity through an array of mechanisms that range from mTOR inhibition, AMPK activation, and anti-inflammatory effects. From my perspective, which is one that includes a strong focus on healthspan, the potential benefits to longevity and healthspan are particularly appealing. But fatty15 also claims benefits for: Metabolic health, Lower liver enzymes, Supporting immune health, Improving mitochondrial function (and thus energy), Supporting a healthy GI microbiome, Improved mood and sleep.
While I still think more research is needed for me to recommend fatty15 as a priority (especially for people who just don't like taking supplements), I am sufficiently intrigued that I think this information is worth sharing. And for people, like me, who do like to explore and experiment with different nutrients and lifestyle approaches aimed at improving healthspan, I think this is one to consider. Somavedic
Somavedic devices are used for EMF (electromagnetic frequency) mitigation. EMFs come from wifi and all wireless devices, bluetooth, cellular devices, 5G signals, etc. I don't believe that everyone is sensitive to EMFs, but over the years I've been convinced that some people are sensitive to EMFs. It seems that EMFs may affect mood, sometimes an increase in anxiety, or decrease concentration, and sometimes disrupt sleep. But EMFs are ubiquitous and it is near impossible to live in an environment without EMFs. For those of us who may be sensitive to EMFs, I do think Somavedic devices can limit the effects of EMF. Most notably this may improve sleep and increase HRV (heart rate variability). If you suspect you may be sensitive to EMFs and want to try a Somavedic device, then you can use this link for a ten percent discount with code DRAMY: click here
Whole Body Collagen
Collagen peptides provide a broad array of support, often improving hair, skin and nails, also improving joint health through increasing cartilage production. Certain collagen peptides have also been shown to improve bone mineral density. But not all collagen supplements are created equal. One of my favorites is Whole Body Collagen, which combines three patented forms of collagen. FORTIBONE collagen peptides specifically support bone mineral density by increasing the production of collagenous bone matrix, essentially for strong bones. FORTIGEL has been shown to accumulate in cartilage and may support regeneration of cartilage within the joints. VERISOL improves skin, nail and hair, with studies suggesting improvements in skin elasticity and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen peptides offer a number of likely benefits, but it's important to remember that while these work synergistically with complete proteins (i.e., animal proteins, whey protein, etc.), collagen peptides are not a complete protein and are very low in leucine (leucine is an amino acid, which acts as a particularly strong signal for muscle protein synthesis). So while I often recommend about 12 to 15 grams of collagen peptides daily, this should not be considered a main protein source. Think of collagen peptides as complementing your protein and providing support for your connective tissues, but not as a true protein source.
Creatine
The benefits of creatine supplementation are certainly deserving of a dedicated blog article. The summary of that blog article would be that almost all of us would benefit from creatine supplementation. It used to be that Bro Science told us creatine was important for optimizing muscle mass. And while this actually turns out to be true, there are so many more benefits to creatine beyond just getting yoked. Creatine is a compound that helps to recycle ATP, which can be thought of as the energy currency of the cells. The research that has most strongly influenced my beliefs around the importance of creatine focus most on brain health. Our brains, which contribute only about two percent of our body weight consume close to twenty percent of our energy. Much of this energy that supports brain functioning is provided by creatine. Understanding this makes it less surprising that some research has shown creatine supplementation may improve cognitive performance, improve symptoms of depression, and improve recovery after traumatic brain injury. Creatine monohydrate is relatively inexpensive, most often well tolerated, and clearly has the potential to offer a number of benefits.
OmegaQuant
We all know we should include omega-3 essential fatty acids in our diet, such as from wild caught salmon or sardines, and most of us might also benefit from an omega-3 supplement, namely a high quality fish oil. The OmegaQuant tests are currently my favorite way of assessing if someone is on track with their omega-3 and omega-6 intake. My favorite test is the Omega-3 Index Plus Test, which measures both the omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids, to look at the balance of these. This test is a simple finger stick blood collection that can be done at home. Order your OmegaQuant Test with 5% off here: click here
